Hospital visits

Find out more about our work to bring author events to children in hospitals through the Scottish Friendly Children's Book Tour

The Scottish Friendly Children's Book Tour brings authors, illustrators and a variety of other creative practitioners to children in schools, libraries, public venues and hospitals across Scotland and the wider UK.

At Scottish Book Trust, we believe books and reading can provide magic, comfort and joy. For children and young people who are unwell, a stay in a hospital can often seem daunting and scary. Sharing the magic of books through author visits in hospitals can provide young people with escape and respite during difficult times in their lives. Books, reading and writing can also help children to understand illness and process emotions with family members.

Our first hospital event ran in May 2021 in partnership with Edinburgh Children's Hospital Charity. The event brought author Michelle Robinson and illustrator Jion Sheibani to the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh as part of our virtual tour with schools promoting mental health. The live stream was beamed to an audience of children and parents at the hospital's pop-up cinema. Children were encouraged to draw along at the event and create their own worry monsters.

'This was our first ever live streaming event using our pop-up cinema and we were thrilled to launch it with the wonderful Scottish Book Trust. Children and young people had a fantastic time hearing the author's stories and joining in with drawing their own worry monsters. We look forward to holding many more fun screenings like this soon.'

In December 2021, we were due to bring Lari Don and Eilidh Muldoon back to the hospital for an in-person event. Unfortunately, due to Coronavirus, we postponed this event and instead shared a special video about the magic of storytelling for children in the hospital to watch on Christmas Eve.

We hope to run more author events for children in hospitals in the future. For more information, please get in touch with thomas.jefferson@scottishbooktrust.com(this will open in a new window).

Supporting children in hospital using books

As well as running author events, we have also created a book list with a range of great reads for all ages and stages to support children in hospital.
