Make school libraries a legal requirement
Help us change the story of school libraries
Did you know there is currently no legal requirement for schools in Scotland to provide a library or librarian for their pupils?
During the National Year of Reading 2026, we are shining a light on the recommendations from our extensive independent research into school libraries. Whether you are a teacher or member of staff in school, a parent or carer, this document offers a template which you can use to write a letter to your local councillor or MSP, to show support for your school library.
You can help to change the story. Call on your local councillor(this link will open in a new window), MSP (this link will open in a new window)or MP(this link will open in a new window) to make it a legal requirement for secondary schools to have a library staffed by a school librarian.
If you would like to take action, download our template letter that you can tailor to support your local school.
