About My Name Is Samim by Fidan Meikle

This debut novel from Azerbaijani-British writer Fidan Meikle is inspired by the true stories of children on refugee journeys across the world.

Nine-year-old chess fanatic Samim and his best friend Zayn are forced to leave Afghanistan after their homes and families are destroyed by the Taliban. Their journey is told through Home Office interviews in the UK as a (finally safe) 13-year-old Samim has his asylum claim considered. Harrowing events and losses are sensitively recounted, but joy is found in the friendships, courage and kindness of those they meet along the way shines through.

As the story unfolds, we are faced with the reality of these ‘nobody’s children’ – alone but resilient. Ultimately, Samim finds his place, supported by new friends and we celebrate the strength and empathy that young people display when they ultimately find their voice. This touching, hopeful and inspiring read is an asset to any class (or home) library.
