The Summer of ‘69

Author: Alan Dapre
Year: Future

It’s 1969
And I am three.
Wearing a space helmet
As we sit in front of a black and white TV.
The astronauts sit too.
Part of the Apollo 11 Space program.
Perched on top of a three stage rocket.
Saturn V
Heading toward the Moon

Fifty years later
I watch the SpaceX
Starship rocket
Explode.

The future
Was meant to be full of
Floating cities and hover bikes.
Not rocket explosions
That mirror the horror of War.
Wasn’t the future meant to be
Free from fighting?

Enlightening?

Is this a test?
Maybe it will still work out for the best?

If we channel the child-like wonder that I had back in 1969.
That you had way back when.

Finding a future that doesn’t fail us.

1969 is a lifetime ago.
Just numbers for some.
But a step in the journey
Of life for me.

I travel
Onward.
Forward.
Upward.

Looking ahead
But remembering
Back to the Future...

Which was a brilliant movie btw.
