Q&A with author Lindsay Hirst

What inspired you to write this story?

My beautiful, but extremely wild, Bengal cat inspired me to write the story. We actually nicknamed him The Beast of Glenisla because of his size and personality. I remember wishing that I had a guide book for looking after dangerous pets. . . so here it is!

What was your favourite book when you were little?

My favourite stories were What-a-Mess by Frank Muir and Joseph Wright, and The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien. The What-a Mess books were wonderful – so funny and cleverly illustrated – and I still have them on my bookshelf. As I grew older, I completely fell in love with The Hobbit. The dragon, Smaug, was always my favourite. In fact, this is where my love of dragons comes from!

What would your dream pet be?

Unsurprisingly, my dream pet would be a dragon. Being able to ride one would be amazing. . . The fire breathing, farting and grumpiness might be an issue, though!
