Each year, a panel made up of families and Early Years experts from libraries, education, health, Scottish Government and third sector organisations get together to select the nine books that go into the Bookbug Bags(this will open in a new window). To celebrate the launch of the 2022–23 Bookbug Bags, we have put together a wee summary of all the amazing books and additional goodies that you'll find in our bags this year.
Bookbug Baby Bag
Gifted by your health visitor when your baby is 3–5 weeks
Look out for My Bookbug Song and Rhyme Book which is full of well-known songs and rhymes to enjoy together and experience cards to mark little occasions such as playing peekaboo, going to your first Bookbug Session or reading a bedtime story. There are also three lovely board books to share with your little one:
Ready, Steady… Roar! (Pat-A-Cake and Steve Mack)
Can you make all the noises animals make? Have a go with this chunky, brightly coloured board book. Your small person will delight in the animals’ faces and the mirror at the end!
Little Baby’s Playtime: A Finger Wiggle Book (Nick Sharratt and Sally Symes)
Time to play and share a giggle! With bright colours and an interactive finger wiggling element, babies will love to share this board book with you.
Baby’s Very First Black and White Animals (Usborne and Stella Baggott)
Spot all the animals with your wee ones in this adorable board book. The high contrasts make it great for sharing with babies time and time again.
Bookbug Toddler Bag
Gifted by your health visitor when your child is 13–15 months
Toddlers will receive a Bookbug finger puppet, some chunky crayons for mark making and a bright white pad of paper. Last but not least, the Bookbug Toddler Bag includes two fantastic picture books and one durable board book:
Monster Clothes (Daisy Hirst)
Toddlers will love sharing this delightfully silly board book with you! With brightly coloured illustrations of monsters wearing everything from dungarees to tomatoes and leaves, it’s full of fun for you and your wee one.
Get Out of My Bath! (Britta Teckentrup)
Can you help Ellie the elephant make some waves in her bath? Little ones will love the interactive elements in this adorable picture book, brimming with chaos and fun!
Tim Hopgood’s Wonderful World of Colours (Tim Hopgood)
This is a mesmerising picture book, with wonderful colours for you and your children to delight in. You’ll love finding the colours in places you might not expect.
Bookbug Explorer Bag
Gifted at childcare settings when your child is 3
This year's Bookbug Explorer Bag includes a pack of bright colouring pencils, an activity book full of fun activities and space to draw, and of course four brilliant picture books:
All Kinds of Families (Sophy Henn)
Celebrate diverse families with this adorable picture book, with every spread full of colour and life. There’s lots to learn as it’s packed with interesting facts about the different animal families you might find in the wild.
The Littlest Yak (Lu Fraser and Kate Hindley)
Little Gertie the yak looks around and all she sees are yaks that are much bigger than her. She wishes she could be big too, so she tries with all her might to grow – until she learns that bigness can be found in the smallest of places. This is an adorable rhyming picture book with a lovely message about being brave and being yourself!
The Button Book (Sally Nicholls and Bethan Woollvin)
What happens when you press a button? Some buttons are for beeping, some are for clapping, some for singing and some for tickling! In this brilliant book, every page has a colour theme to go along with its button and wee ones will love to find out what each one does. Chaos and fun ensue whilst sharing this picture book – but it has a lovely, calming ending for winding down, too.
Out on bikes with Grampy (Anna Jarvis and Hannah Asen)
This year we also have a special book from Play Together on Pedals included in the Explorer bag. Out on bikes with Grampy is a lovely story about an adventurous day out shared between Grampy and his grandchild. From lochs and tunnels to ghost trains, there's so much to explore on their bikes!
Please note: these are the 2022–23 bags. Some local authorities will still be distributing 2021–22 bags, which contain different books and contents. All Bookbug Bags contain high quality, age-appropriate books and resources for families to enjoy.
