Young writers (12–18) winner

I’m upside down. Ready for my first flight. I think.

My heart’s pumping, my ears filled with my voice’s shrill echo.

Mum’s hanging beside me, chirping at me to let go; release my grip from the cave and spread my wings.

And that’s what I do. I do. I do.

“Don’t miss, dingbat!” Dad taunts, chuckling. I shakily tread into position, making a silent prayer and raising Dad’s old scarred bat.

Whoosh! I swing and run. A roar erupts as I violently knock down the third baseman.

Driving home, I realize that by fulfilling Dad’s dreams, I’d broken someone else’s.
