Young writers (12–18) winner

Nieve Deans, age 16

I bound alone over poisoned concrete, space is limited, foxes near. I run, but cannot run forever, roads cutting chasms across my land. Silhouetted on the road, I scamper into the undergrowth, but for how long it will remain, I do not know.

Eyes bright, the hare cannot run forever.

Young writers (5–11) winner

Toby Fielding, age 11

Squaring up to each other, eyes locked, the fighters size up their competition. Leg muscles tensed and standing tall, towering, intimidating the opponent. A jab is thrown, blow after frenzied blow. Erratically they strike, fast and furious. Exhausted, the boxers retreat, straightening their long ears and nursing their bruised paws.
