Benjamin Ofordum, 14
I surface from the water, but I cannot breathe. My senses scream in a strident symphony. Scales burst through my flesh, drawing blood, scarlet spreading its wings in the blue. I scream; my voice, a stranger to me.
I look at my reflection in the pool. A monster looks back.
Young writers (5–11) winner

My feet scatter along the uneven surface as I go deeper. I get splashed by my arms, going back and forth. Holding my breath until my limits as I ace my goals. My legs are going up and down, fluttering. Sometimes, I struggle to stay afloat. I tilt lightly.
