Kirsty-Elise Noonan
The lifeguard had the cheekbones of a Greek god.
I tried to impress him with my backstroke.
Swallowed half the pool.
Spluttered in his direction.
Mum said he looked concerned.
I said it was probably love.
He smiled and said, "Are you here for the beginner class?"
Gaelic winner

Suas is sìos na cuairtean. Anail throm fon uisge, dìreach aon chuairt eile ri shnàmh. Tha Crìsdean a’ togail còig corragan, chan eil sia, na bi nas fhaide, mas e do thoil e. Chan urrainn dhomh cumail orm a’ snàmh san amar-snàimh gun chrìoch seo. Leasanan snàimh aig ochd a-rithist.
English translation provided by Comhairle nan Leabhraichean:
Up and down, doing laps. Breathing heavily under the water, just one more lap to swim. Christopher is holding up five fingers, not six, not much longer, please. I can’t keep on swimming in this endless swimming pool. Swimming lessons at eight again.
