Young writers (12–18) winner

Emily Ward, age 17

The storm was vengeful. The girl's silhouette was barely visible.

Spineless tentacles of fog enrobed the boat, frothing grimly.

It was pushed beneath the water. The bitter sting of salt choked her lungs.

Spluttering helplessly, her body curled in on itself.

After all, a captain goes down with their ship.

Young writers (5–11) winner

Keira Worrall, age 10

Sailing.

A wondrous thing.

Feel the breeze.

The cold salty breeze.

It's my favourite thing to do on a Saturday morning.

My boat is called Betty.

I know it's weird to name a boat.

I guess that means I'm weird.

I don't mind.

I can be myself. You can be yourself.

We are all different. That's the way the world is.
