I worry that all we have built will cave in. Soft and malleable. I look for gaps and weaknesses. With shaky hands I plug them as quickly as I can, hoping that sweetness will solve our problems. We patch and hide the cracks and pray our loving home stands firm.

Air oidhche gheamhraidh rinn seanmhair aran-cridhe còmhla ris an ogha aice. Ghluais fear beag, beò le spìosraidh. Dh’ith e eagal is bheir e gaire. Nuair a dh’fhalbh e, dh’fhuirich cuimhnichean. Dhùin an leanabh leabhar, ag ionnsachadh misneachd ri taobh làmhan blàtha, sgeulachdan aig a’ bhòrd air an fheasgar ciùin.
Translation by the Gaelic Books Council On a winter’s night, a grandma made gingerbread with her grandchild. A little one moved, brought to life by the spices. He swallowed his fear and smiled. When he went, he left an impression. The child closed its book, learning confidence beside warm hands, stories at the table on a peaceful afternoon.
