I write poetry mainly, but have also written non-fiction, short stories, screenplays and two opera libretti. My work has been published in collections, anthologies and journals in Scotland, Slovakia, Australia and the US. I have received writers' bursaries from the former Scottish Arts Council and from Hi-Arts. I am a lead writer for the reading charity Open Book. I have collaborated with artists, composers and other writers. In 2012, I was a lead artist in the UNESCO Shadows of our Ancestors project in the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage site.

More recently, I was involved in developing Words into Music, a project for the George Mackay Brown Centenary, to stimulate new music inspired by new writing. And in a trans-Atlantic collaboration during the pandemic, I co-wrote the libretto for We Wear the Sea Like a Coat, an opera by Sally Lamb McCune, premiered by Opera Ithaca in 2022. I am happy to work with writing groups, in schools, and with other interested groups online or in person. I can give readings, talks, run writing workshops, and enjoy leading renga - especially outside.
