Martin O'Connor

Martin O’Connor is a theatre maker, playwright and poet from Glasgow. He is interested in working with language, verbatim and personal biographies, with a special interest in Scots and Gaelic. He has written and directed work for many companies including National Theatre of Scotland, Tron Theatre, National Museums, National Galleries, and Scottish Opera. His recent one-man performances have incorporated spoken word, sound and contributions form other participants. His 2017 performance Building a Nation was the first to incorporate Gaelic, and he is now studying the language at Sabhal Mor Ostaig. Martin makes a lot of his work in participation settings, working in collaboration with other people to tell their own stories. This is very often in school, community or health and social settings. He is a former drama tutor at Cardonald College’s Supported Learning Department, where he worked with adults and young people with learning difficulties, and he completed his Masters in Education (Equality and Diversity) in 2013. He is currently Creative Writer at Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow, and the director of Tron Theatre Young Company. In 2018 he was awarded the Dr Gavin Wallace Fellowship in collaboration with Playwrights Studio Scotland and The Lyceum Theatre.
