James is the author of the Sunday Times bestselling Inspector McLean series of Edinburgh-based detective novels. In addition he has written three novels featuring DC Constance Fairchild, and the five book epic fantasy series The Ballad of Sir Benfro. James’s first novel, Natural Causes, was the Richard and Judy Book Club Summer Pick in 2013, and was shortlisted for that year’s debut novel Booksellers National Book Prize. He has been shortlisted for the CWA Debut Dagger, the Dagger in the Library and the McIlvanney on multiple occasions.

James has given library talks all over Scotland, as well as contributing to panel discussions at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, Aye Write! and Bloody Scotland.

In addition to writing, James runs a 350 acre livestock farm in Fife, where he raises pedigree Highland cattle. Calving season runs through May and June, during which time his availability for events is limited.
