I have written more than forty-five books covering Scottish and British history and topography, religion, Celtic Christianity, pilgrimage, music (especially musical theatre, operetta, Gilbert and Sullivan, hymnody and sacred music), spas, death and grieving, politics, monarchy and travel. A former staff journalist on The Times and producer for BBC radio and television, I have made and presented numerous documentaries and features for BBC Radio 2,3 & 4 and Radio Scotland and am still regularly interviewed on Radio Scotland, Radio Ulster and Radio 4. I contribute regularly to The Times, The Church Times, The Tablet and other magazines. I remain an active minister in the Church of Scotland and continue to sing in public.
