I have written nine historical novels – two literary novels, six crime novels and a series of supernatural novels. I have been published by Chatto, Constable, and Sphere. My Jem Flockhart books draw on my knowledge of the history of medicine (the subject of my PhD was the Edinburgh Medical Women).

More recent work focuses on folklore and supernatural happenings in remote parts of Scotland at key supernatural points in the year. My work has been shortlisted for a number of awards (e.g. Scottish Arts Council First Book Award, Saltire First Book Award, MacIlvanney Prize). I have chaired numerous events over the last twenty years – panels, and individual authors at writing/book festivals, at book launches and other stand-alone events. I have run writing workshops online (e.g. NOIRwich) and face-to-face (e.g. at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow, Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, Granite Noir). I have given talks on poisons and poisoning (e.g. Bloody Scotland, and NLS) and on the history of medicine (usually on the medical women).

I am a university lecturer by day and have been teaching adults for almost 30 years, so I am confident speaking to large groups of people, and inspiring others to achieve their goals.
