Helping little ones sleep: Tips for a calm bedtime routine

Last updated: 12 May 2025

A peaceful bedtime routine can be one of the most comforting parts of a child's day and one of the most beneficial for their wellbeing. This Bookbug Week, Scottish Book Trust and Sleep Action(this link will open in a new window) share simple, effective ways to help children (and carers!) ease into bedtime.

Why bedtime routines matter

A consistent bedtime routine helps signal to young children that it's time to wind down. Familiar activities, such as bath time, brushing teeth and cuddling up with a book, create a sense of security and predictability. According to Alyson O'Brien of Sleep Action, quiet, one-to-one moments like reading or listening to soft music can significantly reduce anxiety and prepare the body and mind for sleep.

The power of stories and lullabies

Reading a story before bed is more than a lovely tradition. Consultant Art Psychotherapist Mary Rose Brady highlights how shared reading supports a child's emotional and cognitive development, helping them relax and feel safe. Lullabies, too, play a powerful role in providing emotional comfort and strengthening bonds between babies and carers.

Try the Bookbug app at bedtime

The refreshed Bookbug app is packed with features to support sleep, including a dedicated section of bedtime songs and lullabies, plus a Session Finder to locate nearby Bookbug Sessions. Many libraries across Scotland will also be hosting special Twilight Sessions during Bookbug Week.
