Me Owld Orkney Chair

Author: Ingrid Greive (Open Book Orkney)
Year: Future

I wis given this owld Orkney Chair

When I wis nine or ten

By a wife I’d never seen afore

And never sa again

200 year owld she said hid wis

A good piece owlder noo

It must hiv stood in many a hoose

And plenty bums hiv warmed it too

It stands noo in the kitchen

It’s me favourite thinking place

I sit doon in it noo and then

And stare off into space

There’s a drawer below that’s handy

For all the things folk liked to store

Knitting, books a photo?

Precious things and so much more

A gentle kind o presence

Still lingers fae the past

Comfort, strength, reassurance

That I hope is gan tae last

So all you future owners

Who have her in your care

Tak time tae sit doon and reflect

In this weel loved Orkney chair
