Behind the shield

Author: Sylvia Smith
Year: Future

Tomorrow will be the same as today
until the shielding is taken away.
My pretty prison, my own home,
my garden gate, the extent I can roam,
depending on others to keep me supplied,
my access to shops temporarily denied.

The future uncertain, I hark to the past,
When a hug was safe, there was no cost
To drive to the beach, to walk on the sand,
to hold a grandchild by the hand.

Out lunching with friends, a Wednesday meeting,
a night at the cinema, our own choice of seating.
Septuagenarian pleasures that served me so well
may return as before, but no one can tell,
So emerging from shielding is my future hope
while learning from lock-down some new ways to cope.
