Incognita

Two lovers meet in lockdown.

Him: The children worn out, bathed, fed, bedded.
And his wife with her friend downstairs…

Her: Pursued in spirit by her partner.
And their child: a kind of orphan, adopted by social media.

Now attuned to separation,
But less aching than before.
Before all this.
Before the better falsehoods.
Before the denial of despair.
What lies ahead?
What lies? Ahead?
The places we go to from here,
Do they still exist?
The little flame of joy, of longing…
God, let’s keep it going!
Our past has gone. The present isn’t really here.
We are so afraid of tomorrow.

But there’s nowhere else to go now.
