Warp and Weft in Friendship

There are friends of time and space
first meeting incidental.
You both happened to have the same interest
or same class, same work group, same party,
or chanced to share nearby rooms or seats.
And so when you met again in one of those spaces
there was a smile of recognition
and a bit of sharing who you are.

You can't tell on first meeting
that this kind of friendship
with shared interest and shared history
developing as time passes, will grow
to be one of the anchors of your life,
often and frequently just there, needed,
in the give and take of known companionship.

I am wondering about that other magic
sometimes called connection of souls.
Have you felt that ineffable instantaneous hook
that catches two people simultaneously?
Eyes meet across a crowded room,
usually spoken as a cliché of romantic love,
disbelieved by others, known in your gut.
An experience of connection, togetherness,
each arriving with no immediate quality to share,
just recognition. You and I will open to each other.

Time and miles can come between the meetings.
Braided heartstrings link the threads of different lives
forever weaving the warp and weft of friendship.
