The Bonds O' Friendship

Author: Shirley Mackie

There once wiz three lassies akin
Ne’er to meet would be a terrible sin
Different beginnings they surely did hae
But the stars would soon have their say

Oor three lassies were destined tae meet
A lifelong friendship they were happy tae greet
Fifteen years o’ laughter the girls did share
But their stories did not begin there...

The first oan the scene wiz the Edinburgh lass
Fair o’ face wi a touch o’ class
The apple o’ her parents’ een
Young Shirley wiz a sight tae be seen

Oor crazy girl wiz fu o’ mischief
Runnin riot roon the Edinburgh street
Wi pals a plenty usually in toe
She wiz ayways oan the go

A happy wee life the faimlie did share
Love & laughter that could not compare
Four glorious years did wee Shirls enjoy
Before the stars united in their clever ploy

A Bonnie wee babe appeared across the sea
Number two in oor story o’ three
Baby Stacey was a sight tae behold
‘Keep an een on this wan’ her parents were told

A cheeky wee lassie wiz she
A Daddy’s girl she wiz destined tae be
‘Whit a bonnie bairn’ wis the cry sae loud
Makin Mammy Wendy o’ so proud

The stars were tae align once mare
Venturing south o’ the border wi not a’ care
Down to Nottingham they had travelled
For the missin piece before oor story unravelled

Baby Hannah burst onto the scene
Arriving wi gusto as she wiz sae keen
A bundle o’ joy pure as could be
A beautiful babe for all tae see

Wi a cheeky grin & big brown eyes
The proud parents hae really won a prize
Wi many accreditations tae their name
None were sae worthy as this wee dame

The lassies lived their separate lives
Wi much mischief, trouble n’ strife
For years they knew nought of each other
Their spiritual sisters kept under cover

Many a daft wee joab did young Shirley have
Until Drama college provided a laugh
But this life was a mere distraction
For oor lassie craved further action

Auld Reekie had proven too small
When exploring was oor lassie’s call
So aff she went on her travels
Tae sights that were such marvels

A year o’ fun she did partake
Upon return a student she would make
A move tae Glasgow was the final part
This fair city sure melted her heart

Strathclyde Uni embraced oor girl
Wi books a plenty she caused a whirl
Settled intae student life was she
Unaware of goings on o’er the sea

Young Stacey wiz causin' a storm
Ayways on the best o’ form
A chatty n' happy lass she became
Wi many a pal who were but the same

Her flamin red hair
Made the boys o’ Fife stare
But it was her chat that set her apart
Wi witty banter she would ayways outsmart

Soon the streets o’ the Kingdom grew small
An Stacey soon answered her call
So aff tae Camp America she went
The yanks lov’d this gift they were Heaven sent

A Summer o’ fun was tae be had
Of that oor lass wiz fair glad
All too soon her flight hame came tae be
And Stacey set aff for Dundee

Art school became her pure passion
For which she had quite a fashion
A talented girl wiz oor Stace
But Dundee wiz not her final place

Aff she ventured tae the big city
An life became oh so pretty
Little did she ken who wiz close by
It wiz indeed oor Shirl-pie

But the time had not yet come
For lady destiny wiz not yet done
Of Hannah, where had she gone?
Further afield than anyone

The plains o’ Africa young Hannah was found
Amongst the most exotic of sight and sound
Many an exciting adventure she did embrace
Until the faimlie missed the rat-race

A return to Glasgow wiz soon tae be had
Off that wee Hannah wiz fair glad
But wi the rain an sleet a pure hassle
She sought sunnier climates doon in Newcastle

A Photography course she did behold
But alas, oor wee lassie fair missed the cold
So back up the road she came
Back tae Glasgow which wiz her hame

The School of Art soon filled her day
Until Taggart wiz tae pull her away
A couple o’ braw years had she
Until the next chapter would fill her wi glee

The time for the three tae meet drew near
They felt the pull ne’er you fear
Hannah & Stacey were the first tae sit beside
With an almighty crash as their cars did collide

Where most would feel anger & rage
The twa lassies were oan the same page
Ne’er a blame wiz felt by either one
The pull o’ friendship hit them like a tonne

A year o’ friendship they did share
But there wiz somethin missing for the pair
Then a visit tae the dancin they did go
And oan that day Shirley decided tae show

The purest and simplest of aw things
Lady destiny had indeed pulled the strings
The stars had aligned oan that day
To ensure the friendship would eternally stay

A bond they could not ignore
Oor lassies’ joy was about tae soar
Ne’er a dull day had they
Now they had found their way

The bairns had arrived in a number
Ensuring the lassies ne’er could slumber
Busy days ahead for oor three
There for each other they would ayways be

The years passed fu' o’ laughter n fun
Though some sad days were also tae come
Many a tear they each did shed
No words needed just a cuddle was said

Each shoulder has been a great crux
This bond is much more than luck
Lady destiny did a grand thing
So their voices thegether could sing

The story is not quite o’er yet
Many years ahead we would bet
Lots of fun & laughter still tae be had
Of that oor lassies are sae glad

The next part o’ oor tale has yet tae be told
The lassies’ adventures will no doubt unfold
What'er fate has up her sleave
Thegithers’ side they will ne’er leave

The bonds o’ friendship is a beautiful thing
Lady destiny did indeed make oor hearts sing.
