Morning friend

Author: Katie Cutforth

Sofa slats squeaking

Immaculate downward dog

Daily shake to wake

Two types of people

I’m hitting the alarm clock

While he pours coffee

And she tiptoes in

Wet nose to my sleepy cheek

Already impatient

Then we three align

Settle into our daily bliss

Too sweet to feel fair

Sharing the morning

Caffeinating, her waiting

Safest place of all

A natural dozer

But for her, I’m out of bed

Stepping into light

Into a green world

We wander and meander

Chasing butterflies

Sometimes I think of

Her life before us, how strange

Out there all along

We all have past lives

That fade slowly, then dissolve

That don’t matter now

I hated mornings

Until my morning friend came

Brought them back to life

It’s symbiosis

Her day can’t start without me

Nor mine without her

I can never ask

Does she love this like I do

I just have to hope.
