Lifetime with friends

Author: Hazel Richards

We couldn't have known a friendship was about to begin that day. On our first holiday abroad to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary, feeling a bit overwhelmed, we sat quietly in the hotel lounge watching the world go by. A friendly chap spoke to us and introduced his wife, Denise. They were English and with our Scottish accent the four of us struggled to follow our conversation. However, we arranged to meet up the next day. It turned out our husbands shared the same birthday. Our new friends lived over eight hours drive away so maybe we would never see each other again. At the end of the holiday, we arranged to meet at a campsite in Wales which seemed halfway for us. During the last forty-five years, we shared our homes, our families, our holidays and the highs and lows of family life, not forgetting our husband's birthdays. Oh! the countless birthday cakes. Together we shared several holidays every year. Our children grew up and moved out. It was now our time. Some holidays stand out more than others like two months in Spain and six weeks touring the Far East. After several return visits to Thailand, Malaysia and Borneo we went cruising. Then Covid put a stop to everything. There's only three of us now, but our friendship is still going strong. It's been over forty-five years. Who would have expected a chance meeting in Majorca, with our husband's sharing the same birthday would have blossomed into a lifetime friendship.
