Two plastic bowls

Author: Marian Green, Stranraer Creative Writing Group

Two little children, a boy and a girl, run to the door, to kiss their daddy goodbye.
Two little children slam the door, and rush to the kitchen,
Where, on the worktop, Mum has placed,
Two large plastic bowls,
Two forks,
One 500g pack, of demerara sugar
One tub of self-raising flour,
One packet of ten eggs,
One tin of cocoa,
One slab of Irish butter -no margarine for this special birthday cake.
One set of weighing scales.
Two little children, scramble onto
Two dining room chairs, Mum has set against the cupboards.
Two sets of eyes look at their mum, expectantly.
Two sets of hands, grab their bowls, pick up their forks, ready to start.
Into each large plastic bowl, mum measures, 200g of demerara sugar and 200g of butter.
Two little children, using their forks, try to mix, find it too hard.
One at a time, mum helps them, until,
Two large plastic bowls contain a creamy, soft mixture.
Into each bowl mum cracks two eggs and puts in 100g of flour.
Two little children, using their forks, try to mix, find it too hard.
One at a time, mum helps them, they mix some more.
One more egg in each, another 100g of flour,
Mix again, Mum helps.
Lastly, mum spoons 100 g of cocoa into each bowl,
Two little children, using their forks, try to mix,
Two little children lick some mixture from their forks, mix again.
Mum finishes the mixing, gives,
Two little children, two forks, to lick,
'Dad will love his cake, you’ve done a good job,' she says.
Two little children, forks in hand, climb down from two chairs,
Mum smiles one large smile, fills one large cake tin,
Puts one cake in the oven,
Smiles again,
Where will the third little helper go? she wonders.
