Growing Old

Author: Fiona Hamill
Year: Adventure

Oh, I wish I had something to look forward to, said the old lady to herself. Too late for anything at my age. Past my time long ago. She passed her days alone, wondering why that was.

Suddenly, a knock at the door. She got up slowly from her chair.

Oh, it’s the postman! I don’t get much mail – bills more like. But he has come to me. Opening the door, there was a letter in the postman’s hand. He gave it to her with a smile. She thanked him and turned to go in.

‘Have a nice day,’ he said to her.

‘Oh, yes, thank you,’ with a smile.

Closing the door, she went in to open the letter.

Then a smile. Oh, she had to sit down. It was too much to take in. She read the letter again.

Her great niece, Morag, had written.

“Dear Aunt Margaret,

I didn’t know until recently where you lived. I’ve been searching for you. In July I am getting married and would love it if you could come.

It would be lovely if I could visit you soon. Please write to me.”

The old woman read the letter again. Her whole manner had changed. Of course she would love to see Morag and also to be a guest at her wedding.

She had something to look forward to. Life, she thought, is full of surprises.
