He has published five novels, including Grace Notes (shortlisted for the Booker prize and awarded the Saltire Society Scottish Book of the year 1997).
His first novel Cal became a major film starring Helen Mirren. He has also published six collections of short stories.
His latest book is Blank Pages & Other Stories.
Bernard is a member of Aosdana, an organisation that aims to "honour artists whose work has made an outstanding contribution to the arts in Ireland".
