The joy of reading queer Scottish novels
Layla McCay, author of The Queer Bookshelf: A Reader’s Guide, reflects on ten important Scottish queer novels
Growing up, I didn’t know there were Scottish books about LGBTQ+ people. I assumed queer stories belonged in San Francisco or New York. Then one day, in Johnstone Library, I found a book about a queer person in Scotland. I was startled. The story didn’t mirror my own, but it unfolded in places I recognised. That small shift from 'elsewhere' to 'here' thrilled me. It made queerness feel possible, built my self-esteem, and instilled in me an optimism for my future.
Since then, I’ve devoured queer books of all kinds as the LGBTQ+ bookshelf has expanded in scope, joy and complexity. But for me there has remained something uniquely powerful about stories that are rooted close to home.
Here are ten books that capture that feeling.
