Free afternoons out with wee ones

Last updated: 30 April 2026

One of the best parts about Bookbug Sessions is that they are completely free! But what if you want to continue the fun with a free adventure after your session? Read on for some inspiration for low-cost afternoons out for the whole family!

1. A sensory stroll through a botanical garden

Wherever you are in Scotland, you’re not usually (too) far from beautiful flowers! Fancy maximum mental health benefits? Try doing some sensory time with your little one: smelling the flowers, feeling different textures and looking for different colours.

Top tip: Check out Glasgow Botanics for a fun Bookbug hunt during Bookbug Week (18–24 May).

2. Cosy coastal walks

The great thing about Scotland? Over 18,000km of coastline! Wrap up with your wee ones and see what you can spot: boats, seashells, birds. You could even practice counting all the different interesting things you see!

Top tip: Practice your sea-themed songs on your walks! You can find A Sailor Went to Sea on the Bookbug App.

3. Head to the park

It’s a classic kid’s afternoon out for a reason! Take your wee one to a green space near you, and you’ll be sure to have some little adventures. You could try doing some bark rubbings on the trees using crayons and paper – you could even find twigs to make a wee frame for your artwork.

Top tip: After your Bookbug Session in the library, you could take out a picture book or two (all kids are entitled to a free library card!). Then you could bring the book to the park and have storytime under a tree, maybe even with juice and a snack from home.

4. Visit a community centre

Fancy craft activities, more social events or simply a rainy day escape with your little one? Each local authority has fantastic community spaces where you can often do activities for free and meet local families. Connecting to your local community can be a great way to combat feelings of isolation and boost mental health.

Top tip: After your Bookbug Session, you could always ask library staff if they have details about your local community centre. Libraries are often a fantastic source of local information!
