More Like the Sea

Author: Susan P Mains
Year: Future

The wind to me
Seems more like the sea
Boisterous, buffeting
Elements free

Out of our hands
Not bound by this time
It rushes ahead
Towards the sublime.

High gales and wide wakes
Both fierce and then calm
Will not be quick tamed
By bridge or by dam.

Tomorrow unfurled
The oceans raised high
Carrying borders
Away in the sky.

Gusts of wild hopes
Cold fears and hot joys
These do not submit
To narrative ploys.

There is no beginning
Hushed middle, then end
The wind is a hero
Old foe and kind friend.

So face the next storm
A huge rumbling blast
Now trying to prize
Our backs from the past.

Embrace the headwind
Stretch out heart and hand
A tidal escape
The future’s our land.
