Migrants(this will open in a new window) is a powerful wordless picture book by illustrator Issa Watanabe. It explores themes of courage, loss and hope in a story of what it takes to migrate to a new land. Issa will join us LIVE from Peru!
During time spent in Mallorca, Issa saw many images in the news of migrants landing on the island’s shores. After meeting these migrants and hearing their stories, Issa felt compelled to do something. So she did what she knew best, and one drawing followed the next until a story was formed.
For an audience of upper primary children, Issa will explore challenging themes within the book. She will discuss how and why she used animals in the story, and the hope and kindness that underpins it.*
This event also looks at language and how it doesn't have to be a barrier separating us. The event will be delivered by Issa in Spanish, her first language, and she will be joined live by a translator.
In addition, the award-winning bi-lingual author and literary translator Lawrence Schimel will join us to discuss his work. His picture books have won a second PEN Translates Award from English PEN recently, and one of his books was chosen for IBBY Outstanding Books for Young People with Disabilities for the THIRD time, among many other awards, honours, and distinctions.
*The event is also open to students from secondary schools who may have an interest in the subject or the language element.
Following the latest Coronavirus restrictions, this live virtual event will go ahead with a limited schools audience. We'll then share a recording of the event on our website to watch on demand. Applications are open to anyone who wants to join live.
