Scots leid competition 2021 – lang may yer lum reek

We are invitin aw young fowk aged 11–18 tae tak pairt in a braw competition tae scrieve a poem, a story, a play or a sang in the Scots leid.

Lang may yer lum reek. Ever heard onybody sayin this afore? A freend? A relative? Dae ye say it yersel? Dae ye ken whit it means?

If ye’re keen, and fancy gien it a go, here’s hoo tae tak pairt.

Scrieve a Scots story, poem, play, sang or mak a short video inspired by the Scots phrase lang may yer lum reek. Yer scrievins hae tae be in Scots, under 500 words (or five minutes) and the deidline for submittin yer writing is Wednesday 18 August, midday.

The winner will be named Young Scots Writer o the Year 2021 and will receive their award at a special ceremony (The Scots Language Awards 2021) in September this year.

Literally in English, ‘Long may your chimney smoke’.

Scottish folk say it when wishin ithers a lang and happy life.
