Apply now: Arts Alive School Sessions

Arts Alive School Sessions gives schools the opportunity to work with musicians, singers, dancers, composers, actors and other professionals from Scotland’s National Companies through part-funded talks and workshops.

We’re thrilled to be working with Scotland’s National Performing Companies to bring artists into schools. You can apply to bring musicians, singers, dancers, composers, actors and more to your school for workshops and talks in schools (in-person or remote sessions) across Scotland in January-May 2021.

The National Performing Companies offering school sessions are the National Theatre of Scotland, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Ballet and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

Arts Alive makes in-person, remote and digital events with professional performing artists affordable by covering over half of the cost of the artist’s fee with the school, as well as covering the cost of all travel, food and accommodation expenses. You can apply for a single session, a workshop, or an event featuring multiple performers.

Alongside financial support, the expert team at Scottish Book Trust and the National Company you are funded to work with can be on hand with help and advice for planning and making the most of your session. We'll pay the artist directly, and invoice you for your contribution after the event has taken place.

Applications for Arts Alive sessions are currently open. Please download the application form(this will open in a new window) and return to kayleigh.bohan@scottishbooktrust.com by Friday 9 October 2020 at noon.

For 10 fully funded sessions including a CLPL session and a resources grant of £500, apply for Arts Alive Residencies.

What are the panel looking for?

We want to fund events that could not happen without the support of Arts Alive and events that take place in schools where they are needed most. Please be clear about why you need this funding to bring in an artist. Please be specific to your school and community’s circumstances.

We are looking for learning professionals who are excited to bring the arts to their pupils. You do not need to know the exact event at this stage – it is enough to tell us about what you are most interested in doing or what you most want to work on within the school (e.g. you'd love to improve the confidence of a particular class or group with a workshop). You do need to demonstrate that you will work enthusiastically with the artist and National Company to plan the event and welcome them to your school and community.

Covid-19 restrictions

Sessions can take place remotely, digitally, distanced or in-person, depending on what works best for your school and the artist/s. This will be decided on a case-by-case basis by the artist and school and will be informed by relevant public health advice.

Arts Alive and Live Literature

Your school can apply for support from both programmes. Please note that if you are successful in applying for a residency from either programme, this may be taken into consideration if you apply for sessions that would be used during the same school year. You can apply for Arts Alive school sessions if you have existing Live Literature sessions that you intend to use this school year.
