School event with Struan Murray

Apply now for fully funded primary school events with Struan Murray in Edinburgh on 20 and 21 February 2020.

Struan Murray(this will open in a new window) is Scottish and grew up in Edinburgh, the youngest of a large, rowdy family of redheads. He has a PhD in genetics and is now a lecturer in biochemistry at the University of Oxford. Orphans of the Tide(this will open in a new window) is his first novel.

Struan's event encourages children to write their own fictional stories. The event begins with an introduction to Orphans of the Tide leading into a discussion of the inspiration behind the story, including pictures showing how Edinburgh inspired the setting of the story, and why writing fantasy can be a great way to explore real things and places.

Things get interactive as the children work together to develop a story with inspiration drawn from Struan's own experience of developing his main character and setting. The children will have the opportunity to make suggestions and even vote on ideas to shape their stories.

The event will finish with a lively Q&A session.
