The mer are disappearing but no one seems to care. The mer child, Ruby, feeling ostracised and alone, leaves the mer colony. She heads for the forbidden bay where her life takes an unexpected turn. Finding herself land-bound, she has to learn to survive in a strange world. With her faithful companion at her heels, Ruby makes her way to a cottage in the woods. But things are not as they seem ... Here her instincts become twisted and she doesn't know who or what to believe. It is up to her to decide who to trust, unaware that the future of the mer lies in her hands. Can Ruby find the courage to face the mounting dangers, save her friends and escape back to the sea? Moira Cormack writes novels for young people, fairytales and poetry. Her first novel, The Witch of Land and Sea, was published in 2016. The places in the book are inspired by her walks in Midlothian and along the East Lothian beaches. She is also a relationship coach, has taught children in a myriad of contexts and is a mother of four. We are delighted to welcome the P5 pupils from Campie primary school but any home-schooled children (aged 7-11) are very welcome to attend.
