Ricefield Arts Chinese Library is delighted to invite artist and curator, Katherine Ka Yi Liu to lead our first reading group 'for daughter(s) that are yet to be born'. Liu focuses her research-led practice on sociolinguistic constructions of diasporic identities and the conflicts within the politics of power, gender and race. Currently, Liu is also a committee member at Transmission Gallery, Glasgow.

In this reading group, she would like to explore and discuss texts by Xinran. Xinran's writings reveal the hidden stories and unheard voices of Chinese womxn and address issues that they were/are facing on a daily basis, such as infanticide, son preference, suppression of sexuality, homosexuality and the sexism embedded in Chinese culture and society.

In Miss Chopsticks, Xinran explores the uneasy relationship between Chinese 'migrant workers' and the cities they flock to. The reformation of the economic system in China is changing – womxn were once a disposable burden, but they can now take on jobs in cities, such as being a waitress, a masseuse, a factory line worker or a cleaner. They started to bring bundles of cash home. Their income has earned them unprecedented respect from patriarchal villages, as well as gaining the respect and hearts of city dwellers.

The reading group provides a safe platform to experience these texts collectively and exchange our experiences through discussion. The reading group will end with a few breathing exercises in hoping to slowly begin our generative healing journey. Selected texts will be provided. All are welcome.

Our Chinese library collection is donated by our Glasgow community, including the books of Xinran. It is a lending library that opens every Wednesday, home to an intricate selection of classics, books on Chinese art and culture, bilingual material, language learning, etc. Find out more here:
