Jess Smith is the queen of bletherin’. She was born into a family of Scottish Travellers. She spent the first 17 years of her life as one of Scotland's wanderers of the roads. Her cultural roots, familiar campsites and extended family (once referred to as Tinker folk) would one day present the backdrop for a series of books. Promising her father that one day she'd write a book on the culture, Jess felt more at home writing about her own journey; Jessie's Journey was published in 2002 and went into the Scottish bestsellers list, reaching number one. This spurred her to pen another two biographical books, a story book and a novel. It was after this, with her father's promise in mind, that she began researching the wider history leading to Way of the Wanderers, packed with facts and history.

Come along and hear her wonderful stories.

The event ties in with the Reading Friends project, for which secondary school pupils meet with older members of the community, so although it is for adults, the pupils will also be there to chat.
