I am a stand up comedian, improviser, and writer for online BBC content.
I first studied stand up comedy myself in Amsterdam in 2014. This course instilled the importance of creative writing in developing material for the stage. I have been writing and performing Fringe shows for the Edinburgh, Wellington and Auckland Fringes since 2016. Last year I completed my Edinburgh Fringe run at the Stand Comedy Club. I was also invited to headline comedy shows in Moscow and St Petersburg and appeared on Scottish stand up programme The Comedy Underground on the BBC.
As a Shetland dialect speaker I have been running workshops in Shetland for the Shetland Islands Council and local group Shetland Comedy, writing stand up and performing improvised comedy as well as a Scottish Book Trust Book Week Tour in 2018.
For my workshops I begin with a family friendly routine. Then, after a general discussion on comedy, we break down the routine into types of jokes and study the process of writing that has led to the set. There are writing exercises in the workshops encouraging pupils to begin writing their own comedy sets and jokes. These exercises are suitable for all creative writing, including short stories and sketches.
