John Brewster
I am a writer and writing tutor living in Fife, working in English and Scots. My poetry and short stories have won various awards and have been published in a range of books and magazines. I am a Scots Patron of Reading, and also a qualified teacher in RE and English, with a First in Divinity from St Andrews University.
I have taught creative writing in schools, libraries and other educational and community settings. My courses, workshops and readings have been delivered to a diverse range of groups, from the homeless to other disadvantaged people, such as those with learning problems and addiction issues.
What drives me is going beyond the usual conventions by deconstructing the assumptions that inhibit people from expressing themselves. Everyone has a creative way in and a creative way out. My approach is to explore these entrance and exit points, understanding what moves us and moves through us. I employ my skills as a writer and teacher to develop innovative projects that explore the relationship between our words and our ways of doing, feeling and thinking. I believe we all have a tale to tell, so my work is to help people discover their own story.
