I am a novelist and short-story writer. My first novel According to Ruth (Harvill Secker, 2007) was shortlisted for the Authors’ Club best first novel award and the Dimplex prize; Love Me Tender (Harvill Secker, 2009), a collection of linked short stories, was shortlisted for the Edge Hill Short Story prize. An Inventory of Heaven was published by Corsair in 2012. Crazy, a work of autofiction is due from Corsair in 2021.

For seven years (2013 – 2020) I was senior lecturer in creative writing at the University of Exeter.

I have been a Hawthornden Fellow and am a Fellow of the Royal Literary Fund. I regularly tutor in fiction and on ‘starting to write’ courses for the Arvon Foundation.

I give readings of my work; run fiction-reading, writing and editing workshops at all levels, and offer one-to-one mentoring sessions.
