I grew up in the fishing village of Anstruther in the East Neuk of Fife, went to school in St Andrews and read English at Cambridge University. I have written 17 books: six stand-alone novels, a series set in Galloway and featuring DI Marjory Fleming, and more recently another with DCI Kelso Strang of the Serious Rural Crime Squad, set in Skye and Caithness.
My husband and I live in Edinburgh in a house with a balcony and terrace built by an astronomer to study the stars with a view towards the castle - great for fireworks parties at New Year. My son is a criminal defence lawyer who keeps me straight on technicalities, and I was a Justice of the Peace myself for ten years. I have been Chair of the Society of Authors in Scotland and am currently a director of the Crime Writers Association.
