My stitches are neat. Mother taught me well. From childhood, I would stay indoors, quietly watching, then copying, Mother's exquisite needlework.  Sad she never got to complete her masterpiece.   I finish for her. Last stitch done, thread tied off. I stand back, admiring our handiwork.   A patchwork of human skins.

Young writers (12-18) winner

Yi Lin Yang, age 14

Death is a young woman.  Every night she sits in her room full of scrolls of century-old fabric, unraveling her spools of thread.  She weaves, embroiders, sewing in feeling after feeling, color after color.  Personalities and faces appear on the cloth.  A new person has been added to her collection.

Young writers (5-11) winner

Elspeth Bainbridge, age 9

A long time ago, there was an underground kingdom. They produced all of Mars's wool and yarn. But one day, all the machines in the kingdom broke! People had to get inventive. They sewed lots of scarves out of spaghetti bolognese and nobody was ever hungry again.
