Adult winner

Camila Contreras

Every time I eat a slice from a farm loaf,

I have vivid memories of my grandmother.

Her strong and wrinkly hands

working the dough on the counter.

Flour in the air.

The best bit was her smile down to me

when the smell rose from the oven.

It’s ready.

Young writers (12-18) winner

Patrick Heyes, age 17

I hate chocolate brownies. My mum made them every Sunday. She was a terrible baker, always put in too much sugar. They tasted awful.

Yet every Sunday I make a batch, always sure to add extra sugar. Not because I like them, but because they remind me of her.

Young writers (5-11) winner

Isla Thomas, age 9

Once there was a witch who couldn’t bake, though she had 500 cookbooks. She whisked up egg, butter, flour, milk and sugar, and put it in the oven. “Abracadabra” she yelled, but nothing happened. “I’ll just turn these funny knobs” and suddenly the cake began to bake. “Amazing!” She thought.
