Writers in Education

Opportunity

Scottish Book Trust is seeking a published writer, interested in developing their skills in delivering sessions, projects and residencies within a school setting. The successful applicant will be paired with a writer with experience in delivering such projects, as well teacher/educator for a period of approximately 3 months.  The purpose of this initiative is to give writers with little or no experience of delivering classroom sessions the opportunity to work with a mentor with an established track record of working in schools.

Project aims

The project aims to support the applicant as they develop the skills required to deliver quality projects and residencies. The project will also provide good practice models for both schools and writers working in schools.

Person specification

  • Enthusiastic, reliable individual with an interest in working in a school environment for a sustained period
  • Has a commitment to developing the skills and knowledge required to deliver meaningful experiences in school
  • Must fulfil the criteria for eligibility on the Scottish Book Trust Online Database
  • Should demonstrate an understanding of the potential impact of writer's sessions within the school environment
  • The writer will be expected to contribute to the evaluation of the project
  • Writers interested in working in both primary and secondary schools are eligible to apply

Project Description

The successful applicant will take part in a set number of preparation meetings with both the experienced writer and the teacher/educator.  These meeting will establish the agreed plan and the goals of the sessions to be delivered.  In the context of one sustained project, the successful applicant will observe, assist with and then lead the delivery of sessions in the classroom, with the support of both the mentor writer and the teacher/educator. During this period everyone involved in the project will report back to Scottish Book Trust at pre-agreed intervals.

Cost

The successful applicant will not have to pay for any of their training, and travel expenses will be covered. They will also be paid at Literature Funding rates for the sessions which they deliver (£150 per hour long session).
