Timecatcher - Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick

Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick’s Timecatcher is a great novel, about a magical Timecatcher that opens up every 7 years. When Jessie Minahan and her mother are looking for somewhere to get hold of some buttons, and they stumble across a disused button factory, now inhabited by two detectives and a shed-load of secrets, Jessie has no idea about the adventure she is soon to experience.

The main theme of Fitzpatrick’s novel is magic. This is set right at the beginning when Jessie enters the factory and a ghost appears out of the wall. When Sully Ellz’ Mede is given the death sentence and turned into a ghost, he is determined to cause trouble for everyone he can. As the Timecatcher gets closer and closer to its opening time, Jessie, the ghosts and the detectives must try their best to prepare for the worst!

One of the things I liked about this book was the vast physical and personal description Fitzpatrick presented to the reader. There are several strong characters in the novel, including Jason, Nat, Greenwood, G, Sully and Jessie.

Throughout the book, the plot is quite advanced, and following the story can be quite a challenge at points! Despite this however, the confusing plot makes the book much more interesting. It was impossible to guess what was coming next, which I found a good thing.

I think the audience that would suit this book would be capable readers aged 11-15. I say capable because I don’t think the plot would suit older teenagers, but it isn’t a very simple text. The ending of the novel was very successful. Personally, I found the beginning of the book rather dull, and up until about the middle I was forcing myself to read it. However, once I got past that, I couldn’t put the book down. It improved dramatically and I found myself much more compelled to read it.

I found the beginning of this book slightly dull, but that changed after I read further on, and I found myself liking it a lot more after I’d reached about half way. I would give Timecatcher 3 stars out of 5.
