Sue Reid Sexton's story about Whores in History

« Back to The Book That Changed My Life
Author: Nickie Roberts
Synopsis
A look at the place of prostitution in western society and "a defence of the unrepentant whore", it is a history that highlights the proximity of sexuality to spirituality, as in the high-ranking temple whores of ancient Egypt, and leaves your in the (nearly) present day when prostitutes are thought of as the scum of the earth.

My Story

I read this having just learnt that one of my friends was making money by selling sex. I found myself in total support of her activities but deeply concerned for her welfare, this being the wrong era in which to practice that trade. The shadow of Victorian times still looms large and the sexuality of both men and women today is deeply troubling, but this book paints a much more relaxed picture of casual but loving or at least respectful sex, and sex as something that can bring us closer to 'God', whatever we understand by that name. It's a history of the sex trade but I couldn't help examing my own attitudes to sex and what sex is for and about, and of course my relationship at the time. Oops! There's the rub.
