SynopsisThe Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is set during World War II and is about a German family who move house because of the fathers' work as a Nazi Commandant. The youngest child Bruno, goes exploring one day and finds a little boy his age called Shmuel who is a Jew and living in a concentration camp. Bruno doesn't know what a concentration camp is but he decides that he wants to live there with Shmuel. So the two of them played for a day and then they were told they had to strip off and get into a room with all the other men at the camp. This is a brilliant story with lots of excitement and a mind changing ending.
My Story
The Boy in the striped Pyjamas by John Boyne is set during the Second World War and takes you through the life of Bruno , a nine year old Boy. He is curious and clumsy but very caring too. He lives with his Mother, Father and older Sister, Gretel.
When his family are moved from their comfortable home in Berlin to a house in the desolate countryside Bruno takes the chance to explore the area. He finds himself at a large fence talking to a Jewish Boy his age called Shmuel. Even though they live in the same area their living conditions are very different. Shmuel lives on a conentration camp and Bruno lives in a comfortable home with his family. Bruno is oblivious to the life that Shmuel is livingand treats him like all the children ha knew.
When Shmuel ' s Parents go missing and do not return Bruno tries to help by wearing striped pyjamas and going to the other side of the fence to try and discover what hapend to Shmuel 's parents. They are both put into gas chambers by the Nazis in the process.
This book has changed my impression of war it has also made me think about how and why people treat each other differently. It has highlighted the prejudices towards the Jews at this time in History.
