June Allison Edgar's story about Catch 22
« Back to The Book That Changed My Life
Author: Joseph Heller
Yossarian, a US bombadier in WW2, is serving in Europe in a war that seems to be governed by lies, bafoonery and banality. The book follows Yossarian as he tries to claim insanity to be medically discharged and sent home.
My Story
I read this as a young teen, after watching my father explode with laughter while reading it. I've still never read anything like it - including Heller's other books. It formed my view of War, and many other pointless exercises and defines the Human Condition with all its foolishness, bureaucracy, vulnerability and viciousness, and above all humour, as well as any writing I've come across since.
