Grant Johnson's story about The Easy Way to Stop Smoking
« Back to The Book That Changed My LifeThis book is as exactly as its title suggests. Being an ex-smoker the Author deals with nicotine addiction and its withdrawal symptoms from his own experience and stays on the same wavelength as the smoker and assisting them knowledgeably throughout his book.
My Story
I discovered about this book a few years ago, from a cousin at a family wedding reception. I offered him a cigarette and he refused and our conversation turned to the subject of the addictive habit. My cousin Gordon answered that he had given up with the help of a book, and asked me if I wanted to stop? I immediately answered yes. He asked why I was so sure, and I mentioned an incident that occurred a few weeks prior to the wedding.
I had returned to work after a period of inactivity due to a leg injury, during which I spent resting, drinking endless cups of tea and coffee, and smoking numerous fags. I rolled my own so I couldn’t keep an accurate count, but it was a lot more than usual. I was cycling home after my first shift for over two weeks and I built up a bit of speed on the flat in order to combat a hill that normally, I managed remained in the saddle. This time however, my breathing became erratic. I quickly lost my rhythm with the gears, causing me to dismount. I was coughing, spitting and through the spots before my eyes, I lost my pride and dignity before what seemed a huge crowd magnifying my self inflicted predicament. In fact it was only a few people waiting for a bus that I walked meekly past.
I recovered enough to cycle the rest of the way home realising that I would seriously have to address my smoking problem. Since then I’ve been conscious of every cigarette and trying to cut down.
On hearing this, Gordon agreed, and said that it was probably the right time for me to read the book. The right time being a time when I was wishing that I could kick the habit but I lacked conviction self belief and the main stumbling block from previous attempts, I suffered from the fear of failure.
Gordon who stayed in London sent me a copy from a large bookstore there (one of the few outlets at that time).
Although I didn’t stop instantly, I instantly related to the author and somehow sensed that with the help of this book, I would eventually give up smoking. He is an ex smoker himself and has therefore experienced the difficulties concerned with trying to stop. He covers all aspects related to the subject in a most understanding and effective manner. It’s coming up for twenty years since I became one of his high success rates, and overcame my fear of failure to proudly become a much fitter, healthier and happier non-smoker
